How did you choose your blog name?
Most parenting bloggers tend to still have kids at home. I didn’t want to mislead my readers by letting them think I have kids still at home. Yet I wanted them to realize I have a lot of knowledge and insight to share based on my experience as a mom. So I wanted to use Gma (what my grandkids call me) in my blog name. But I didn’t want readers to shun my blog thinking I’m too old to be relevant to today’s parents. I’m an expert researcher and still relatively young. I’m not like a lot of older parents (grandparents) who think everything of their generation was the best, right, or only way. Times change. Information changes. And with those changes, come changes in parenting methods and issues. Anyways, I was going to go with ‘the cool gma’s guide to parenting’. But my daughter told me ‘cool’ is too old school. She suggested ‘the young gma’ would be more appealing to parents. I decided that fit me and my blog perfectly.
What keeps you motivated and inspired to blog?
First, readers keep me motivated. I like to know I’m bringing something of value to parents. Research, reading, and learning new things also keep me motivated. It goes hand-in-hand with writing. Finally, just knowing my writing might make a difference in someone’s life is the ultimate inspiration.
Tell us a little about your family.
I have two grown kids. My beautiful 28-year-old daughter has given me two wonderful grandchildren. My grandson just turned a year old, and my granddaughter is three. My son, 24, has a big heart. But he also has a serious mental illness and is disabled. It’s been a rough road for both of us, and my journey as a parent is far from over.
Where do you see your blog and yourself in 5 years?
I see my blog being a massive encyclopedia of everything parenting in 5 years. I’ll still be writing parenting articles for parenting and lifestyle magazines, as I do now. My blog is the perfect extension of that. I’m also working on some children’s books that teach critical thinking, which I think will bring more parents to my blog.
Biggest life lesson learned blogging?
I’ll be able to answer that in a few months, but I’m sure I have plenty to learn as I go.
What is your secret to success? My secret to success in everything I do is that when I decide to do something I run with it. I make every effort to make a go of it and to go big with it. If it fails, at least I know I gave it all I’ve got. But most of the time, it leads me to success, which becomes motivation for the next big thing.
All bloggers encounter writer’s block. How do you get past this?
I spend that time researching (a useful form of procrastination), which leads to ideas churning in my head. Before long, I’m ready to get it down on paper. The first draft is agony though. Getting what’s in my brain onto paper in an organized and coherent fashion doesn’t happen very well. I have to force myself to let it just come out as it is, then revise, revise, revise.
What was your sweetest success story?
I’ve had a few, but really owning a rare and collectible books business was probably the sweetest. In part, because it just happened when I was trying to clear out a few books from my personal reference library, which quickly turned into a full-time business that lasted for 13 years. The other reason it was the sweetest is because I’m a bibliophile and owning a bookstore was something I always romanticized but never really expected I’d be doing.
How do you relax?
I don’t. Actually, I go through long periods where I don’t. But when I do, I like to binge watch shows like The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Homeland, Game of Thrones, and a bunch of other binge-worthy series.
